Caregiver Job Description

1. Employment Arrangement: Due to the ever changing nature of the job, except for Live-in Caregivers, all of our Caregivers work as Contract Employees with BEAMS. This means that the duration of their employment is contingent upon the duration of the contract that BEAMS hold with the client to whom the caregiver is assigned. Other factors that will affect the duration of the caregiver’s employment including death of the person being cared for, change in circumstances such as moving to a nursing home, replacement of the caregiver upon request of the client or due to other factors such as illness, disciplinary actions etc.

2. Types of Services:

As a Caregiver, you provide a variety of non-medical services that allow seniors to remain in their homes. These services generally fall under two categories:

Companionship
Personal Care

i. Companionship: Companionship services are those that stimulate, encourage and assist an individual.

The primary responsibilities of Companionship services include the following: Providing companionship and conversation
Providing stabilization and assistance with walking
Preparing meals and cleaning up meal-related items
Providing medication reminders and appointment reminders

ii. Personal Service : Personal Services are personal in nature and often include assistance with activities of daily living.

The primary responsibilities of Personal Services include the following: §Assisting with bathing
Assisting with grooming
Assisting with toileting and incontinence issues

iii. Secondary Responsibilities: Secondary responsibilities include the following:
Contributing to a positive living environment to enhance a client’s quality of life Performing other reasonable duties as assigned
Reporting hours according to office policy
Reporting any significant changes in a client’s needs or living conditions
Regularly communicating with supervisor and office staff

3. Working Arrangements: We are looking for caregivers who are able to work within one or all of the following arrangements:

i. Full-Time: Full-Time constitutes 40 or more hours per week for an extended period of six (6) or more months. Our Full-Time Services offer two options for caregivers (1) One (1) Live-In Caregivers or two (2) Caregivers covering 12 hour shifts (a daytime caregiver and a nighttime caregiver).

ii. Part-Time: Our Part-Time services are for persons and families who are looking someone to cover a couple of hours per day, or few days per week amounting to less than 40 hours per week.

iii. Respite: This kind of caregiver coverage is usually necessary when families have to take vacations.

iv. On-Call: Our On Call services are for those who need a caregiver within a short turnaround time (between 1 week and 48 hours notice.) and for special circumstances (weekend or holiday) amounting to less than one month of service.

v. On-Demand – This is for EMERGENCY situations where a caregiver is needed right away and with as little as less than 24 hours notice.

4. Essential Qualifications

i. Must be minimum of 19 years of age
ii. Holds the minimum education, experience and skills to perform responsibilities (NA, CNA etc – Certification necessary but not always Required)
iii. Must have and continue a clean Criminal Background report
iv. Must have and continue a clean Sex Offender report
v. Must also be registered, plan to apply or have applied for registration with the Bermuda Nursing Council and/or Aging and Disability. Must be non-smokers and possess a valid First Aid / CPR certification and a clean criminal record.
vi. Understand, speak, read and write English clearly
vii. Ability to bend, twist, stoop, kneel, and reach
viii. Ability to walk independently up and down a normal flight of 13-15 stairs
ix. Ability to withstand exposure to dust, mold, mildew and cleaning solutions
x. Ability to treat and care for clients and their property with dignity and respect
xi. Ability to adapt to various living environments and locations
xii. Ability to communicate with clients in a friendly and congenial manner
